Internal quality control (IQC), which is used to ensure day-to-day consistency of an analytical process, is a vital part of laboratory workflows. It helps to determine whether patient results are reliable enough to be released. Performing IQC also enables the laboratory to monitor and document the quality of its work. In most of the countries it is required to perform IQC by national regulations.

As an international standard, ISO 15189 Medical laboratories — Requirements for quality and competence specifies the quality management system requirements particular to medical laboratories.

Our guest Dr. Gordon Sinclair will talk about his experience in haematology with regards to internal quality control and the challenges of fulfiling ISO 15189 requirements. In this context many questions arise on what control materials are best suitable for haematology analysers. Manufacturing haematology controls requires some extra efforts since blood cells differ greatly from clinical chemistry analytes and need to be stabilised to cover a period of time. But does this still suit the ISO 15189 requirements?
